Showing - Getting Started
If you have a whippet at home and are interested in starting to show there are a couple of simple ways to approach this wonderful hobby.
Many reputable breeders will potentially have some show background and if not have someone they know who does so ask your breeder if they have any information they can give you.
Your whippet MUST be Royal Kennel Club registered if you want to enter limit, open or championship shows run by Whippet Breed clubs or General championship show societies.
If you don't have anyone you know and this is your first adventure into the show ring try to find a show local to you and go and have a look. If you still think it's for you and your whippet you should look for your closest ring craft club. At these clubs your whippet will be able to socialise with many different breeds in a friendly and relaxed environment. The committes that run these clubs are very knowledgeable in many breeds. You will be taught handling skills and ring etiquette and your dog will learn to be in close proximity to other dogs and how to stand both on the floor and on the table (whippets are judged and "gone over" by the judge on a table). At these clubs ask lots of questions especially of other whippet owners who will be happy to help and point you in the right direction.
The most important thing to remember no matter where your showing journey takes you is "you always take the best dog home!"
Have fun and good luck!
